People everywhere have similar needs and aspirations.
If we are ever to have a peaceful world, these need to be expressed, widely
propagated and recognized throughout the world. In an attempt to create such a
set of COALS, the following items were put together and after some review were
included in the award winning book, THE FRIENDLY AMERICAN. This book was the
result of a world-wide essay contest for our military and all government people
for essays on WHAT I HAVE DONE TO MAKE FRIENDS FOR AMERICA. The GOALS were
included in the book in 28 languages to make them available to others and to the
highlight the need for a common language, to be taught in all countries, in
addition to the native language. Then, by knowing just two languages, everyone
could communicate with everyone else. The GOALS have been modified to include
the environment.
-
To stay alive, healthy, and
vigorous that we may pursue life, liberty, and happiness and make life truly the
great adventure it should be.
-
To be honestly respected as an
individual by other people.
-
To love and be loved, to have a
home and a family.
-
To have a chance to work, and
obtain a reasonable share of this world's goods and services enabling us and our
families to eat, be sheltered, and enjoy the benefits of our accumulated
heritage of knowledge and technical advancement.
-
To enjoy a maximum of freedom for
doing anything we wish, providing we do not injure others or interfere with
their equal rights. Our concept of freedom includes freedom of speech, of the
press, of religion, and freedom from dire want, fear and exploitation.
-
To live in a world where the
GOLDEN RULE is man's law of life and all people act with honesty and integrity;
in a world of compassion, of consideration for others and a readiness to extend
a helping hand; in a world with a profound love of justice, a bitter hatred of
cruelty and unnecessary suffering.-
-
To have an opportunity for
education, to "know" and understand about life and the world we
inhabit, and to develop fully our powers of mind and spirit.
-
To be ruled by leaders elected by
the majority of the people who will labor for our welfare, safety, happiness,
and personal freedom.
-
To have all nations control their
population growth, and work to insure that their citizens will guard and protect
our planet earth's environment, our land, forests, rivers, seas and air, so that
their children and others who follow can still enjoy the wonders of our planet
home.
-
To provide all children and youth
PRE-PARENT education to insure that every baby is a wanted baby, hopefully born
to a father and mother with a stable relationship, who can provide the loving
care and guidance needed for a healthy, well-adjusted citizen, who will guard
and protect these goals for their own children and posterity.
-
To achieve a world at peace, a
world without war or threat of war, in which all nations and their peoples can
live in mutual cooperation, helpfulness, and understanding.
-
But always with a peaceful world,
we seek a nation that is never wanting for:
A. Brave citizens, as our Paul
Revere, ready to "ride through the night" to raise the alarm of attack
from without or treachery and corruption from within;
B. Leaders such as our Thomas
Jefferson -- third President of the United States -- who had a burning love for
truth and declared, "I have sworn hostility against every from of tyranny
over the mind of man";
C. Or heroes like our Patrick Henry
who, with his immortal cry, "Give me liberty or give me death," will
never let us forget the hard battles fought for the freedom we enjoy -- and that
we too must be ready to fight for them if need be.
NOTE: The above three items are taken from the award
winning book, THE FRIENDLY AMERICAN, published in 1963 by the Armed Forces
Writers League (AFWL).
